Our clients demand rigorous standards, and we are proud of our ability to meet them. We seek law school graduates who share our passion for excellence to join an elite group of young lawyers and enjoy a challenging career at Phillips Lytle. We seek enthusiastic and motivated attorneys who have done well academically at top law schools. We seek law school graduates who can demonstrate a client-focused passion for the practice of law, a genuine commitment to pro bono work, and an understanding of the value that diversity contributes to the success of an organization. We invest heavily in the professional development of our Associates because it’s important to them, and because our clients demand uninterrupted delivery of effective legal representation.

Our Associates enjoy an unusual amount of autonomy and client contact. In fact, we entrust our Associates with considerable responsibility, including participation in practice development, training, hiring, diversity, pro bono work, and quality of life issues. We do not have a rotation system for first-year Associates because many of them are hired directly from the ranks of our Summer Associates, and have usually made up their minds as to their practice group preference.

Those Associates that do not start as Summer Associates are extended offers for a particular practice group in the firm. Thus, they usually know the group and practice-specific area to which they will be assigned before they join us.

Performance Reviews
Our Associate Evaluation Committee conducts annual reviews of all Associates based on written reviews by the Partners with whom they have worked during the year. Our Associates also receive continued guidance and feedback from the Partners throughout the year.

Training
Training is essential to the professional development of our attorneys and to the continued success of our firm. We train our attorneys in three ways. First, each practice group conducts in-house training sessions to help Associates understand the legal foundation of their practice. Second, we sponsor their attendance at continuing legal education programs. Finally, we entrust our Associates with responsibility early on, and we have them work directly with Partners on a regular basis.

Campus Recruitment
Phillips Lytle welcomes student applications from all law schools, and conducts on-campus interviews at the following law schools: Albany, Cornell, State University of New York at Buffalo, and Syracuse University.

We also participate in the Dupont Minority Job Fair.

Finally, to encourage interested students to contact us, we send invitation letters to the following law schools: Boston College, Boston University, Fordham University, Georgetown University, Harvard University, Hofstra University, New York University, George Washington University, University of Michigan, University of Notre Dame, University of Pennsylvania, and University of Pittsburgh.
